Airbnb implemented new house rules on October 20, 2026, that will prevent hosts from requiring guests to perform extensive checkout chores, taking effect for bookings made on or after November 20, 2026 [1][8][13]. This policy shift aims to improve guest experience by standardizing expectations and eliminating rules described by an Airbnb spokesperson as “confusing, onerous, and hard to manage” [4][14]. The change has sparked significant backlash from some hosts concerned about increased operational challenges and potential financial strain [8][9].

## What the records show

Under the new policy, hosts are prohibited from asking guests to complete tasks that “require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner” [1][4]. Examples of these forbidden tasks include stripping beds, washing and putting away dishes, starting laundry, or taking trash off-site [1][2][5][6]. Hosts may still make “reasonable” requests, such as asking guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather towels, or separate trash and recycling into indoor bins [3][4][7].

Cleaning fees paid by guests are now intended to cover only standard tidy-ups between bookings [14]. The updated guidelines also explicitly forbid hosts from imposing their own fines for unperformed tasks; any property damage should be handled through Airbnb’s AirCover program [3][10][14].

## Timeline of changes

Airbnb has been addressing cleaning fee issues since at least April 2025, when cleaning fees stopped being shown to guests upfront, allowing hosts to factor these costs into the total price of a stay [1]. The company officially announced the new house rules policy on October 20, 2026 [8][11][13]. These updated rules will apply to all reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026 [1][2][6][11].

## What changed and for whom

The changes represent a fundamental shift in responsibilities between guests and hosts [6]. Guests will no longer face demands for extensive cleanup tasks, addressing long-standing complaints about paying cleaning fees while still performing chores [1][7][12]. For guests, the policy is designed to streamline the Airbnb experience and make house rules clearer [4].

For hosts, the policy introduces new limitations. Many hosts have voiced concerns about increased operational burden, potential hygiene issues if properties are left in worse condition, and financial strain due to the likely need for more professional cleaning services [3][7][9]. Some hosts are reportedly discussing removing their listings from the platform in response to these changes [6][9].

## What the subject has said publicly

An Airbnb spokesperson stated that the company “redesigned them [house rules] to make them easier to discover and clearer to set, alongside a new policy that keeps requests reasonable, with no surprises” [4][14]. The company emphasized that the aim is to clarify expectations for both guests and hosts [8]. Airbnb has also issued warnings that non-compliance could lead to penalties for hosts, including reduced visibility in search results, official warnings, listing removals, or permanent bans from the platform [2][3][10].

## What we could not confirm

It could not be confirmed how many hosts will ultimately remove their listings or the precise financial impact these new rules will have on host profitability. The widespread extent of potential hygiene issues due to guests leaving properties untidier also remains an open question.
