Australia officially offered astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg to the European Space Agency (ESA) around October 22-23, 2026, for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2028 [1][2][3][4]. This potential mission, estimated to cost “well north of $100 million,” would mark the first time an Australian astronaut officially represents the nation in orbit [3][4][6]. So far, approximately $25 million in non-federal support, comprising cash and in-kind commitments, has been pledged for the mission [1][14].

This offer represents a significant step for Australia's space ambitions and for Katherine Bennell-Pegg, who became the first person to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag in April 2024 [4][5][9]. The mission is seen by supporters as a strategic investment in research, science, education, and diplomacy, with the potential to inspire careers in STEM fields [3][10][11].

## What the records show
The Australian government sent a counter-offer to the ESA to secure a 2028 mission for Katherine Bennell-Pegg [2][8][12]. Federal Minister for Industry and Science, Tim Ayres, confirmed the formal nomination [4][13]. The cost for Australia's contribution to this mission is expected to be “well north of $100 million” [4]. Ayres stated that the Commonwealth Government could not meet this financial commitment alone, requiring contributions from state governments, industry, and private philanthropists [4][6]. Non-federal support for the mission has reached around $25 million in cash and in-kind commitments [1][14]. South Australia is the only state that has publicly committed to supporting Bennell-Pegg's space bid [2][6][12].

Katherine Bennell-Pegg completed her basic astronaut training with the ESA in April 2024, graduating as a fully-qualified astronaut [4][5][9][17]. She is also the Director of Space Technology at the Australian Space Agency and holds the title of 2026 Australian of the Year [4][10][16].

## The timeline
Katherine Bennell-Pegg completed her basic astronaut training in April 2024, becoming the first person to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag [4][5][9]. Earlier in 2026, the ESA had made an offer to Australia [8][12]. However, the Australian government struggled to secure widespread state government support for the initial funding proposal [2][12]. Subsequently, around October 22-23, 2026, Australia submitted a “counter-offer” to the ESA, formally nominating Bennell-Pegg for a 2028 ISS mission [1][2][3][4][8].

## What changed and for whom
The shift from ESA's initial offer to Australia's counter-offer resulted from the Australian Federal Government's difficulty in obtaining sufficient state government funding [2][12]. This ongoing negotiation process affects Katherine Bennell-Pegg directly, as her 2028 ISS mission depends on a final funding agreement [4]. The mission's success could provide significant opportunities for Australia's space sector and broader scientific community, fostering research, education, and international partnerships [10][11]. The urgency of securing a seat is heightened by the ISS's anticipated operational end around 2030, which limits available mission slots [11].

## What the subject has said publicly
Katherine Bennell-Pegg has emphasized that the mission is “not just about a ticket to space” but involves “a program of research, science, education, diplomacy and supply chain access” [11]. She stated that the astronaut acts as the piece that enables such a program [11]. Bennell-Pegg has also highlighted the dwindling number of seats on the ISS, noting that other space agencies are filling the remaining slots as the station nears its end of life around 2030 [11].

## What we could not confirm
A final funding agreement between ESA, state and territory governments, and private contributors remains unresolved [4][16]. The specific details of Australia's counter-offer to the ESA were not confirmed [2][8][12]. The identities of all industry, philanthropic, and university donors contributing to the $25 million in non-federal support, apart from South Australia's public commitment, have not been disclosed, as some donors requested confidentiality [1][14][18].
