Four people died and two were critically wounded in a school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, where a 16-year-old gunman opened fire [1][3].

This tragic event marks another instance of gun violence in schools, prompting reflections on safety measures and the immediate, devastating impact on families and communities. The intervention of a civilian bystander also highlights the complex role of armed citizens in such incidents.

## What the records show
The shooter, identified as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old former special education student, entered Silver Rail Elementary at approximately 12:58 p.m. PDT on Thursday, October 15, 2026 [13][17][18]. He used a 12-gauge Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun, firing through a locked door's glass panes to gain entry [17]. Police Chief Mike Krantz stated John fired up to 15 rounds [17]. The attack targeted a special education classroom, which had four adults and five children present [17]. Victims included 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and three children: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, and two other boys aged 8 and 11, whose names were withheld [1][3][12][19]. Teacher Becky Drury, 54, and 7-year-old student Saylor Graham were critically wounded [13][20]. Two additional people in the classroom escaped physical harm [2][12].

## The timeline
The shooting began shortly before 1:00 p.m. PDT on October 15, 2026 [18]. The first 911 call reporting an active shooter came at 12:58 p.m. PDT [18]. Bend police officers arrived on the scene four minutes later, at 1:02 p.m. PDT [18]. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter, fatally shot the attacker inside the special education classroom [22].

## What changed and for whom
All schools in the Bend-La Pine district closed on Friday, October 16, 2026 [21]. Silver Rail Elementary remained closed indefinitely [21]. Other district schools reopened on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with an increased police presence [21].

## What the subject has said publicly
Wounded teacher Becky Drury released a statement through a family friend, recounting her experience [4][8][9][11]. Drury stated she ran to see what was happening, immediately saw the shooter, and attempted to shut her classroom door [8][9][11]. Before she could act, the shooter shot her at close range, causing her to fall [8][9][11]. Drury said she then "pretended to be dead in the hope he would not shoot me again" [5][6]. She added that she had no chance to shelter any of the children [9][11].

Kaylub Giamanco, the civilian credited with stopping the shooter, gave his first interview on Friday, October 23, 2026 [22]. Giamanco, who had two daughters attending Silver Rail, pursued the gunman into the school after witnessing him enter [22]. He confronted the attacker while legally armed with a .40 caliber pistol from his truck, and fatally shot him [22]. Police, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, and President Donald Trump have credited Giamanco with preventing further casualties [22].

## What we could not confirm
The identities of the 8-year-old and 11-year-old child victims were not released publicly [19].
