On October 19, 2026, a court in Cairns determined a teenage boy was liable for rape, stemming from a February 2025 home invasion where a woman was sexually assaulted [1]. This development follows Queensland judges upholding a three-year detention term for another 16-year-old in a related Cairns rape conviction earlier in October 2026 [2].

These legal rulings bring further resolution to a crime that Queensland Police described as "horrific," involving serious charges against multiple teenagers [12]. The case has prompted public statements from officials and calls for justice for the victims [7][9].

## Latest Legal Developments
A Cairns court was informed on October 19, 2026, that a boy accused of detaining a husband at knifepoint was found liable for rape [1]. This ruling follows an earlier decision in October 2026 where Queensland judges upheld a 3-year detention term for a 16-year-old in a Cairns rape conviction related to the same incident [2]. Additionally, on June 11, 2026, another teenager involved in the Manunda home invasion pleaded guilty to sexual assault and other charges [10][14]. These charges arose from the incident where a woman was threatened with a tomahawk and sexually assaulted while her partner was restrained [10].

## The Crime and Initial Arrests
The original incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, February 21, 2025 [3][12]. Three teenagers reportedly broke into a home in Manunda, Cairns, where a couple was attacked [3][12]. The husband was allegedly detained at knifepoint, and the woman was sexually assaulted [1][5][12]. Detective Inspector Kev Goan described the event as "one of the most abhorrent acts committed during a break and enter" he had witnessed [12]. Queensland Police arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, within hours on the same day, followed by the arrest of a third 15-year-old [3][4][8][12]. The first two teenagers each faced 11 charges, including five counts of rape, two counts of armed robbery, and two counts of deprivation of liberty [12]. The third teenager was charged on Saturday, February 22, 2025, with 13 offenses, which included rape, armed robbery, and deprivation of liberty [12].

## Public and Official Response
The victim of the alleged gang rape made a powerful statement, read by a friend at an anti-violence event on March 3, 2025 [9]. Queensland's Premier publicly pledged to bring "justice" to the victims following the incident [7]. All court proceedings have been conducted within the Children's Court system because of the accused individuals' ages at the time of the alleged offenses [12].

## What we could not confirm
We could not confirm the current ages or specific identities of all the teenagers involved due to reporting restrictions applicable to the Children's Court. We also could not confirm the exact sentencing details for the boy found liable for rape or for the teenager who pleaded guilty, beyond the three-year detention term upheld for one 16-year-old.
