A chemical plant fire, accompanied by "dozens of explosions", erupted in the San Nicolás neighborhood of León, Guanajuato, Mexico, on Friday, October 23, 2026, prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,000 people and injuring at least one person [1][5][7][11][13][14].

The incident highlights ongoing industrial safety concerns in León, a city where the footwear industry frequently handles flammable chemicals. The event follows another chemical explosion in León earlier this year, raising questions about prevention measures for residents and workers in industrial zones [7][9].

## What the records show

The fire occurred at a factory on Bahía street, located between Río Azul and Río Amarillo, in the San Nicolás neighborhood of León, Guanajuato, Mexico [1][2][6][7][9][13]. The facility manufactured solvents and raw materials primarily used in the footwear industry [6][7][9]. Reports indicate that "dozens of explosions" shook nearby homes and businesses, and a large column of black smoke became visible across the city of León [5][6][7][8][9][14].

Emergency services, including firefighters from León (Bomberos de León), Municipal Civil Protection (Protección Civil Municipal), and Municipal Police, quickly responded to the scene [7][8][11]. Approximately 1,000 people were evacuated from the area as a precautionary measure [7][11][13][14]. Initial reports confirmed that one person sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital [3][11][13][14]. Some sources specified that the injury was serious [5][8][14]. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by approximately 7:40 PM on Friday, October 23, 2026 [7][11].

## The timeline

On Friday, October 23, 2026, the fire erupted at the chemical plant in León [6][7][9]. Reports vary on the exact start time, with some indicating shortly after 4:00 PM local time, others minutes before 5:00 PM local time, and some minutes after 5:00 PM local time [6][7][9]. By approximately 7:40 PM on the same day, the fire was completely extinguished [7][11]. Depending on the reported start time, the firefighting efforts lasted between approximately two hours and forty minutes and more than three hours [6][7][9][11].

## What changed and for whom

One person was injured and required hospital treatment [3][11][13][14]. Reports indicated the injury was serious or involved severe burns [5][8][14]. Around 1,000 individuals were evacuated from their homes and businesses in the affected vicinity as a safety measure [7][11][13][14]. Road closures were implemented around the San Nicolás area to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles [6][13]. Authorities advised residents in nearby colonies to keep their doors and windows closed due to the dense black smoke [6][7]. This incident is the second chemical explosion in León in 2026; a similar event occurred in the "La Reserva" neighborhood in February, also requiring mass evacuations [7][12].

## What we could not confirm

PrimaryBrief could not confirm the exact time the fire started, the precise nature and quantity of chemicals stored at the factory, or the exact cause of the explosions and fire [6][7][8][9]. It also remains unconfirmed if workers were trapped inside the facility, or if there were two seriously injured people as some reports suggested [5][10].
