Korean author You Yeong-Gwang, born in Seongnam in 1984, achieved global literary recognition with his debut novel, 'The Rainfall Market,' a book whose rights were sold in over 20 countries and translated into 18 languages by February 2025 [2][15]. His journey from personal hardship and late-night writing sessions at a bus stop culminated in this widespread success [2].

This story highlights how profound personal adversity, including vision problems and challenging employment, fueled creativity, transforming a demanding daily routine into the foundation for a novel that resonates with readers worldwide. You's path offers a compelling narrative about perseverance and the power of imagination, inspiring those facing their own struggles.

## What the Records Show

You Yeong-Gwang faced significant personal challenges early in his life [2][4][11][12][14][15]. He experienced vision problems, and after eye surgery, bright lights caused him pain, which limited his employment opportunities [2]. For a period, he worked as a telemarketer at a call center, enduring daily verbal abuse until he could no longer continue in the role [2]. His eyesight eventually recovered [2].

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which spurred demand for food delivery services, presented a new opportunity for You [2]. He began working as a food delivery driver in Gangnam-gu, navigating the city on a motorcycle to complete numerous deliveries [2]. It was during these shifts that the initial concepts for his novel began to form; he would jot down ideas on his phone about a place called "Rainbow Town," "dokkaebi" (mythical Korean goblins), and a mysterious glass orb [2].

To cope with the intense summer heat, he shifted his delivery hours to cooler nighttime periods, typically finishing work between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. [2]. With the first bus home not available until 5:30 a.m., You found a unique workspace: a bus stop near Gangnam Station [2]. For two to three hours each night, he meticulously organized his notes, transforming them into the narrative that would become his coming-of-age fantasy novel, 'The Rainfall Market' [2][3].

'The Rainfall Market' centers on Serin, a high school student invited to a magical market that appears only when it rains, where she is offered the chance to exchange her life for a better one [3][5][7]. Accompanied by a mystical cat named Isha (also spelled Issha), Serin embarks on a journey of self-discovery through various fantastical settings within the market, including bookstores, hairdressers, and perfumeries, all while being discreetly followed by a mysterious shadow [3][5][8]. You openly stated that he imbued Serin with many of his own experiences and feelings, including childhood resentments and the struggles of caring for an ailing mother while facing personal challenges [16]. He confessed to wishing someone could transform his misery into happiness, a sentiment echoed in Serin's quest [16]. The novel explores themes of Serin learning what is important in her life and the idea that happiness may merely require a change in perspective [3][6][8].

## The Timeline

You Yeong-Gwang was born in Seongnam in 1984 [2][4][11][12][14][15]. He experienced vision problems and worked as a telemarketer before becoming a food delivery driver during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he began to write 'The Rainfall Market' [2]. Before its official launch in Korea, the book secured a major deal with a UK publisher [2]. By February 20, 2025, rights to the novel had been sold in more than 20 countries and translated into 18 languages [2].

## What Changed and for Whom

For You Yeong-Gwang, the writing of 'The Rainfall Market' marked a significant shift from a period of physical exhaustion, financial instability, and an uncertain future to becoming a globally recognized author [1][2]. For readers, the novel is intended to offer courage and healing [4][6][11][12][13][14]. Literary reviewers describe it as a "feel-good, magical narrative" and a "gentle, affirming, and utterly transportive" story [6][8].

## What the Subject Has Said Publicly

In an interview with The Korea Herald, You described the bus stop near Gangnam Station as "the best workspace I could ask for," noting its "grand view of the city, an air-conditioning system and a convenience store right behind it" [2]. He humorously referred to it as having "the most expensive office right in the heart of Gangnam" because he lacked air conditioning at home [2]. You said he felt "truly happy" while writing the story, despite the physical and financial hardships [2][4][6][11][12][13][14]. He stated, "I wrote the character with a lot of my own experiences in mind. Serin embodies the feelings I had as a child, including moments of resentment toward her family and the struggles she faces," and added, "In my darkest moments, I wished that someone could transform my misery into happiness" [16]. He expressed his hope that readers find courage and healing through the story [4][6][11][12][13][14].
