On October 11, 2026, a video recording device was discovered in a female-only shower facility aboard the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) vessel HMAS Leeuwin while docked in Cairns, Queensland, prompting a 100% audit of all fleet bathrooms [1][3][6]. This incident has drawn sharp condemnation from Australian Defence Force (ADF) leadership and government officials, highlighting persistent concerns about privacy, sexual violence, and cultural challenges within the military [1][2][3][5].

## What the records show

The Australian Defence Department confirmed it became aware of the video recording device on October 11, 2026, located in a cabin on HMAS Leeuwin [6]. The incident was referred to the Joint Military Police Unit, which is working with civilian authorities [6][7]. The department stated it takes this incident “extremely seriously” [6].

Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie brought the issue to public attention on October 14, alleging in the Senate that concealed cameras had been found in the female sailors' shower facilities [3][6]. Following her statements, Defence confirmed the discovery [6]. An ADF member has been identified as a “person of interest” [1][7]. By October 19, this individual was “stood down with pay” as inquiries continued [5][9]. Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Matt Buckley, confirmed no evidence of recorded footage being shared online had been found [5][9].

## Timeline of discovery and response

The video recording device was discovered on October 11, 2026, on the HMAS Leeuwin in Cairns, Queensland [6]. The incident was referred to the Joint Military Police Unit the same day [6][7].

On October 14, 2026, Senator Jacqui Lambie revealed details of the incident in the Senate, stating she was informed of concealed cameras in female shower facilities [3][6]. Later, the Defence Department confirmed the device's discovery [6]. Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Matt Buckley, pledged a full investigation and labeled the act a “despicable betrayal of trust” [2].

By October 15, 2026, Defence confirmed an Australian Defence Force member was a person of interest [3][7]. Vice Admiral Buckley announced a “100% audit of all bathrooms across the fleet” [3].

As of October 19, 2026, the identified person of interest had been “stood down with pay” [5][9]. The investigation is receiving assistance from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) [5][9].

## What changed and for whom

The discovery initiated a comprehensive investigation by the Joint Military Police Unit, with support from the Australian Federal Police [5][9]. The identified ADF member, now a person of interest, has been removed from duties with pay [5][9].

In response, the Navy launched a thorough “100% audit of all bathrooms across the fleet” [3][5]. Senator Lambie called for an independent body outside the ADF to investigate such matters, arguing Defence must address its culture [3].

## What officials have said publicly

Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Matt Buckley, condemned the act as a “despicable betrayal of trust” [1] and explicitly called it an “act of sexual violence” [2]. He stated, “This is unacceptable behavior. We will not tolerate it” [1]. Defence Minister Richard Marles described the incident as “reprehensible, invasive” [3]. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy stated the behavior “undermined the dignity and privacy of Royal Australian Navy personnel” and “was completely unacceptable” [5]. Senator Lambie highlighted the “alarming situation” and expressed “deep concern for the safety and dignity of the personnel” [1].

## What we could not confirm

PrimaryBrief could not confirm the identity of the person of interest or whether any charges have been laid. The specific type or model of the recording device, the exact duration it was present, and the total number of individuals potentially affected could also not be confirmed.
