Alexandros Paporakis, 19, from Palatine, Illinois, was arrested on October 11, 2026, for allegedly planning a mass shooting at the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, Illinois, an attack authorities say was thwarted when his weapon jammed [1][3][7][9]. The alleged plot was uncovered after Paporakis reportedly confessed to a co-worker, who then alerted authorities [3][7].

This incident matters because it represents an alleged act of hate-motivated violence targeting a place of worship and highlights the role of individual citizens in preventing potential tragedies. Community leaders have connected the foiled attack to a rise in online hate speech directed at Hindus and Indians [2][5].

## What the records show

Prosecutors allege Paporakis, a cashier at a Taco Bell, frequently expressed racist and white supremacist views at his workplace [3][7][15]. He allegedly discussed Nazi ideology and made threatening remarks about killing Indian people [3][7][15]. Investigators found an eight-page document, allegedly written by Paporakis, titled "Why I fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)" [3][7]. In this document, Paporakis allegedly described himself as a "sociopathic white supremacist neo-Nazi" and outlined a plot for mass violence against Indian, Jewish, and African American people [3][7][9][14]. During a search of Paporakis's home, law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armor, a tactical vest, and items depicting Nazi symbolism [3][8][9][14]. Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons [3][7][15].

## The timeline

Weeks before the alleged incident, prosecutors say Paporakis's rhetoric against Indian people intensified [4][15]. On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Paporakis allegedly drove his vehicle to the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, armed with a rifle and body armor [2][6][11]. Authorities state he remained in the parking lot for several minutes and attempted to open fire, but his weapon malfunctioned [1][2][9]. After fleeing the scene, Paporakis contacted a co-worker, admitting his gun had jammed and he had left "super fast" without being seen [3][7][15]. He allegedly sent the co-worker a photo of himself in a tactical vest along with other digital communications [3][15]. The co-worker then alerted police, leading to the coordination of Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments [7][8]. Paporakis was located and arrested outside his Palatine residence on the evening of October 11, 2026 [3][7]. Authorities publicly announced the arrest and charges on October 14, 2026 [3][9]. A judge ordered Paporakis to remain in custody before trial, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 30 [3][9]. The FBI has joined the investigation [5][16].

## What changed and for whom

Palatine Police Chief William Nord emphasized the seriousness of the alleged threat and the importance of protecting places of worship [7]. The Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple has implemented additional security measures, including an increased armed security presence [6]. Authorities have credited the co-worker for reporting Paporakis's threats [8]. Community leaders have linked the alleged plot to online hate speech and white supremacist rhetoric, citing a surge in online hate against Hindus and Indians [2][5][10][12].

## What the subject has said publicly

It is not immediately clear if Alexandros Paporakis has legal representation, and there are no public statements from him or his legal team in the available evidence [7].

## What we could not confirm

We could not confirm the specific intended location of the alleged attack, as police stated it remains under investigation [7][16]. We also could not confirm if Paporakis has legal representation at this time or any public statements from him or his representatives [7].
