On October 17, 2026, Indian YouTuber Dhruv Rathee led an anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protest in London, drawing hundreds of Indian students and diaspora members [1][5][10]. The "Stop Vote Chori" demonstration at Parliament Square, near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, cited alleged "vote theft" and irregularities in India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls [1][5][10][14]. Rathee specifically called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar [1][5][14][16]. A smaller counter-protest by pro-Modi supporters also took place, with Metropolitan Police separating the two groups [1][5][8][15].

This international protest highlights concerns among some Indian citizens and the diaspora regarding electoral transparency and fairness, bringing global attention to claims of democratic backsliding in India [1][10][12].

## What the records show
Hundreds gathered in London on October 17, 2026, with Indian YouTuber Dhruv Rathee addressing the crowd near the Mahatma Gandhi statue [5][11][16]. The protest, organized by groups including the Indian Overseas Congress Youth wing and Students' Federation of India (SFI) U.K., focused on alleged "vote chori" and irregularities in India's electoral rolls [5][15][17]. Participants demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and increased electoral transparency [5][14]. Rathee explained the protest was in London because dissent was suppressed in India [10][13]. A smaller group of pro-Modi supporters staged a counter-protest, waving Indian flags and chanting slogans [8][15]. Metropolitan Police kept the two factions apart [5][12][15].

## The timeline
Both the "Stop Vote Chori" protest, led by Dhruv Rathee, and a smaller counter-protest by pro-Modi supporters, occurred on October 17, 2026, in London's Parliament Square [1][5][8].

## What the subject has said publicly
Dhruv Rathee publicly demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar [1][5]. He told the crowd, "It is important to spread the message against 'vote chori' in our country," and stated that the protest was held in London because free protest was not permitted in India [10][11][13]. Hirdesh Gupta, founder of India Diaspora UK, a counter-protester, affirmed, "The Indian diaspora in the U.K. stands firmly, shoulder to shoulder, with Modi Ji and his government" [11][15].

## What we could not confirm
Specific details regarding the alleged "irregularities" in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls or the exact nature of "vote chori" beyond the protesters' general claims remain unconfirmed [1][5]. The precise number of attendees for both the main protest and the counter-protest, beyond "hundreds" for the former and "smaller" for the latter, is not definitively established [1][5][8][15]. We also could not confirm any official response from the Indian government or Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to the protesters' demands [5].
