On October 23, 2026, two Israeli soldiers were killed and three others wounded in a shooting incident at the Yehuda Junction near Hebron, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order an immediate full lockdown of the West Bank [1][7][8][12]. Two suspected Palestinian attackers were also killed at the scene [1][7].

The attack occurred just four days before Israel's general election, scheduled for October 27, 2026, pushing security concerns to the forefront of the national conversation [1][3][4][9]. The swift and expansive military response, alongside pledges for increased settlement activity, has drawn international condemnation, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region [5][7].

## The Attack Unfolds
The incident began around 7:30 AM (UTC+2) at the Yehuda Junction, also known as the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint, where Israeli soldiers were conducting routine vehicle inspections [7]. Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 years old and from Hebron, drove to the checkpoint, left their vehicle, and opened fire with an M16 rifle and a handgun [7]. A firefight lasting over 20 minutes ensued before Israeli forces killed the two gunmen [7][11][12]. The attack resulted in the deaths of Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem, with three other soldiers sustaining injuries [8][12].

## Immediate Retaliation and Broader Operations
Following the shooting, Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered an immediate full lockdown of the West Bank and a cordon around the city of Hebron [1][5][7][9]. His Likud party canceled all Friday morning political events [1][9][10]. Netanyahu announced a major military operation in Judea and Samaria, referring to the West Bank, stating it would be on a scale not seen since the 1967 Six-Day War [4][11]. He and Defense Minister Israel Katz were "considering a very extensive IDF operation" [4]. The operation in the Hebron area included searches, house-to-house sweeps to "locate and dismantle terrorist infrastructure," and the demolition of "illegal structures" [4][5].

## Political Context and New Settlements
Prime Minister Netanyahu characterized the gunmen as "Hamas terrorists" and asserted that the attack was an attempt by enemies to influence the upcoming elections [5][8]. He vowed to "destroy the infrastructure of terror and build the infrastructure of settlement," mentioning plans for over 100 new settlements and outposts in the region [5]. The Har Hevron Regional Council subsequently announced plans for two new Israeli settlements, Magad and Nofei Gulot, along with six farms in the Hebron Hills [7]. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for the Palestinian Authority to be "dismantled and demilitarized" [1][6]. While Hamas praised the shooting as "heroic," the group did not claim responsibility for the attack [1][4][6][8]. A coalition of Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups and Lebanon's Hezbollah also lauded the shooting [6].

## International Criticism and Displacement
The Israeli military operation led to the displacement of at least 2,200 Palestinians and the arrest of at least 70 individuals [7][8]. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern regarding the lockdown's impact on Palestinian freedom of movement [7]. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that the Israeli actions were "part of a pattern of collective punishment" against Palestinians [7].

## What we could not confirm
The exact relationship or affiliation of the two Palestinian attackers, Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, with Hamas or any other specific resistance group could not be confirmed beyond Prime Minister Netanyahu's statements [1][7][8]. No evidence linked the Palestinian Authority to the attack [1][11].
