One year after thieves stole French Crown Jewels valued at approximately $100 million from the Louvre Museum in Paris, most of the treasures remain missing and Louvre President Christophe Leribault warned on October 14, 2026, the museum could face closure without major renovations and government backing [1][2][3]. Four suspects have been arrested awaiting trial, but the stolen items have not been recovered [1][2].

This crisis highlights significant security failures and aging infrastructure at one of the world's most visited cultural institutions, raising alarms about the preservation of invaluable French heritage and the museum's long-term future [2][3][4].

## What the Records Show

The brazen robbery occurred on October 19, 2025, when thieves, disguised as construction workers, accessed the Apollo Gallery [1]. They used a construction basket lift to reach a second-floor window, then employed power tools, including angle grinders, to smash display cases [6][10]. The thieves seized eight historic items before escaping on motorbikes [1][6]. Parliamentary inquiries later revealed security vulnerabilities, including old or non-existent CCTV cameras, a shortage of equipment, and the absence of a modern security control room and director [3][5].

Among the stolen items were jewels from Empress Eugénie, including a pearl and diamond tiara and two brooches [1][7][12]. An emerald necklace and earring gifted by Napoleon I to Empress Marie-Louise were also taken [7]. A sapphire tiara, necklace, and a single earring linked to Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense were stolen [6][7]. The Crown of Empress Eugénie, adorned with emeralds and diamonds, was dropped by the thieves during their escape and recovered near the museum, but it was damaged [6][7][12].

## Timeline

On October 19, 2025, the heist occurred, leading to the museum's immediate evacuation and closure on October 20, 2025 [3][6]. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the theft the day it happened [6][8]. Throughout the following year, police investigations and parliamentary inquiries took place [3][5]. By October 14, 2026, Louvre President Christophe Leribault issued a warning about the museum's potential closure without significant reform and funding [2]. As of October 19, 2026, four suspects remain in jail awaiting trial [1].

## What Changed and for Whom

The Louvre's reputation has suffered, and its financial stability is precarious following the heist [3]. The museum is now pursuing an €83 million security masterplan, which includes upgraded surveillance and perimeter protection, stating it is progressing quickly [2]. The broader
