On October 17, 2026, masked Israeli settlers attacked a delegation of European diplomats, including French Mayor Bernard Baudoux, in the West Bank village of Taybeh, injuring Baudoux and damaging a Belgian diplomatic vehicle [1][2][3][8]. This incident followed a separate attack on October 16, 2026, where an American photojournalist for The Washington Post was seriously injured by Israeli settlers while covering the annual olive harvest [4][7][9].

These attacks highlight a surge in settler violence during a sensitive period for Palestinian farmers, prompting strong international condemnation and raising questions about accountability and protection for civilians and observers in the West Bank [2][6][10].

## What the records show
Masked Israeli settlers assaulted a group of European diplomats in Taybeh during the olive harvest on October 17, 2026 [1][2][9]. Bernard Baudoux, the Mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, France, reported being struck with metal bars and kicked before being thrown to the ground [1][7][9]. Baudoux, 78, did not require hospital care [7][8]. A Belgian diplomatic vehicle had its window smashed during the confrontation [3][8]. Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, stated the targets included Belgium's consul general, French and Polish diplomats, and Catholic representatives [4][8]. The previous day, an American photojournalist for The Washington Post was seriously injured by settlers, reportedly suffering broken vertebrae [4][7][9].

## What changed and for whom
European nations condemned the attack. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot called for further European Union sanctions against those responsible [2][4][6]. France's top diplomat urged Israel to "urgently halt criminal violence" [5]. Mayor Baudoux publicly stated his belief in "a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government" for settler violence [7][10]. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the "severe acts of violence by Israeli rioters" but noted the diplomatic visit was not coordinated with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) [4][11]. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested the reports were a "smear" campaign [5][7]. The Israel Police announced an investigation, vowing to bring those responsible to justice [4][11].

## What we could not confirm
* The full extent of injuries to other diplomats.
* The outcomes of the Israel Police investigation.
* Whether the EU would implement sanctions.
