British singer-songwriter Raye won the 2026 Mercury Prize on October 22, 2026, for her album 'This Music May Contain Hope' [16]. Broadcaster and DJ Sian Eleri presented the trophy to Raye at the ceremony in Newcastle's Utilita Arena [16].

The Mercury Prize recognizes the best album released by a British or Irish artist each year, making this a significant accolade in the music industry [19][25]. The judging panel lauded Raye's album for its scale, structure, ambition, and charm, asserting its importance in demonstrating the album format's potential in the streaming era [26][27].

## What the Records Show

'This Music May Contain Hope,' Raye's second studio album, was independently released on March 27, 2026, through Human Re Sources [7][6][11]. The album debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the Independent Albums Chart [7]. It spans genres including jazz, big band, soul, blues, and orchestral pop, and is structured into four 'seasons' [7][9][10]. The work explores themes of hope, liberation, and human emotion [7]. Raye wrote and co-produced the album with collaborators such as Jordan Riley, Chris Hill, Mike Sabath, Tom Richards, Pete Clements, and Hans Zimmer [7]. Hans Zimmer, Al Green, and Raye's sisters, Amma and Absolutely, are featured artists on the album [7]. The Mercury Prize judging team stated that the album "goes beyond any one style or genre to realise [Raye's] vision" and predicted it would "serve as a huge inspiration for years to come" [27][28].

## Timeline of Events

Raye's album 'This Music May Contain Hope' was released on March 27, 2026 [7]. The shortlist for the 2026 Mercury Prize included artists like Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine, Olivia Dean, Dave, and Suede [21][22][24]. This marked Paul McCartney's first-ever nomination for the award [22][25]. On October 22, 2026, Raye was announced as the winner at the ceremony hosted by Lauren Laverne [16][18].

## What Changed

After accepting the award, Raye performed 'I Hate The Way I Look Today,' a track from her winning album [16][18]. The recognition places her album at the forefront of British and Irish music for the year [19].

## What Raye Has Said

In her acceptance speech, Raye spoke about the album's central theme. She said, "Hope is a very cheesy word, especially for us British people, we don't do that deep stuff like that, but hope is something we all need…so I hope that…" [17]. Raye has also publicly described music as "medicine," stating, "I've always said that, and I guess I'm in the process of making medicine for myself that I can share with the world. I want us all to say to ourselves that it's going to be all right, and I'm going to have faith in the seeds that I've planted beneath the snow" [10].
