Hyron Andrews, a 31-year-old South African lock forward for the Lions, died on October 16, 2026, in France [1][2][3]. Andrews was found unresponsive in his hotel room just hours before his team was set to play in the Investec Champions Cup [1][2]. French authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of his death [1][3][10].

The sudden passing of a professional athlete ahead of a major competition has sent shockwaves through the international rugby community [4][5]. His team has opted to play their scheduled match in his honor, marking a somber start to the Champions Cup weekend [2][3][4].

## What the records show

Andrews was found unresponsive in a shower cubicle in a hotel room on Île de Ré, an island off the western coast of France, shortly after 10:00 AM on Friday, October 16, 2026 [3][4][7]. Emergency services found him in cardiorespiratory arrest, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful [3][4][7]. He was pronounced dead at the scene [3]. The Hotel Atalante on Île de Ré was identified as the location [7]. French authorities reported that a source close to the investigation stated Andrews was found in a shower cubicle locked from the inside [10].

## The timeline

On the morning of October 16, 2026, Andrews was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room in France [1][3]. Paramedics attended, but could not revive him [3][4][7]. The Lions Rugby Company, Andrews' club, released a statement confirming his passing that afternoon [4][5][6]. The South African Rugby Union (SA Rugby) also issued a statement, describing his death as occurring "after a fall" or "following an accident" at the team hotel [1][4][5][7]. French authorities subsequently opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of death, with an autopsy scheduled [1][3][10]. The Investec Champions Cup match between the Lions and La Rochelle, scheduled for October 17, 2026, is set to proceed as planned [2][3][4]. European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) announced that a moment of silence would be observed before all Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup matches that weekend in memory of Andrews [3][7].

## What changed and for whom

The Lions Rugby Company stated that their team would play the Champions Cup match "in honour of Hyron" [4][5][7]. EPCR Chairman Dominic McKay announced, "In memory of Hyron, a moment's silence will be held ahead of every Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup match this weekend" [3][7]. Andrews is survived by his wife, Maiglin, and their two young sons, Hendrix and Emerson [4][5][7].

## What has been said

Lions Rugby Company CEO Rudolf Straeuli stated, "We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was a gifted rugby player, and a cherished member of our Lions family having recently joined us this season" [4][5]. Straeuli extended sympathies to Andrews' family, including his wife Maiglin and their sons Hendrix and Emerson [4][5][7]. SA Rugby President Mark Alexander conveyed, "This is terrible and distressing news; our hearts go out to Hyron's family and the whole Lions rugby community" [3][5][7]. Alexander added that Andrews was a respected member of the rugby community whose "untimely passing is a devastating loss" [3][5][7].

## What we could not confirm

We could not confirm the definitive cause of Hyron Andrews' death. Initial medical reports cited cardiorespiratory arrest [1][3][7], while statements from SA Rugby indicated he "died after a fall" or "following an accident" [1][4][5][7]. French authorities stated an accidental death was a leading line of inquiry [10]. The autopsy results are pending [1].
