South African rugby player Hyron Andrews, a 31-year-old lock forward for the Johannesburg-based Lions, was found dead on Friday, October 16, 2026, in a hotel on the Île de Ré, France [1][3][10]. He was discovered unresponsive in a shower cubicle that was locked from the inside, located within the hotel's spa area [2][3][5].

Andrews' death occurred just hours before his team was scheduled to play an Investec Champions Cup match against La Rochelle [3][4][10]. His sudden passing at a young age, coupled with the ongoing investigation into its cause, has deeply affected the rugby community and his family, leaving unanswered questions about the exact circumstances.

## What the Records Show

Initial reports offered conflicting details regarding Andrews' death. Some accounts suggested he was found in cardiac arrest, while others pointed to an accidental fall as the cause [1][2][6][7]. The La Rochelle public prosecutor, Arnaud Laraize, told The Associated Press that there were no signs of third-party involvement, and accidental death is currently the leading line of inquiry [3][5][10]. Authorities opened an investigation into the cause of death, and a full autopsy was ordered [1][4][10]. The autopsy aims to determine whether a medical event, such as a cardiac arrest, led to a fall or if the fall occurred independently [2][13].

## The Incident

The Lions team was staying at a hotel on the Île de Ré ahead of their Champions Cup match against La Rochelle [2][3]. Andrews had undergone a hammam session approximately an hour before he was found [3][13]. His entourage reported that he had shown no prior health problems in the days leading up to his death [3][13]. Emergency personnel attempted resuscitation, but it was unsuccessful [2][8]. The shower cubicle where he was found was locked from the inside [3][5][10].

## The Aftermath

The Lions Rugby Company and SA Rugby released statements expressing profound sadness over Andrews' passing [2][3][5]. They extended condolences to his wife, Maighlin, and their two sons, Hendrix and Emerson [2][5][13]. Despite the tragedy, the Lions proceeded with their match against La Rochelle on October 17, 2026, playing in Andrews' honor [4][11][12]. Before kickoff, a moment of silence was observed, and Andrews' number five shirt was placed on the field [11]. Several Lions players were seen crying during the moment of silence, and a La Rochelle shirt was presented to the Lions staff by the French club [11]. Andrews had previously played for the KZN Sharks and Sale Sharks before joining the Lions [3][5][8][13].

## What We Could Not Confirm

We could not confirm the definitive cause of Hyron Andrews' death, as the autopsy results were still pending at the time of reporting [2][13]. The exact sequence of events that led to him being found unresponsive in the shower cubicle remains undetermined [2][3].
