The 25-year-old disappearance of Janine Vaughan from Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, is undergoing a new investigation with the involvement of US-based digital expert Bryan Neumeister [1]. Vaughan, then 31, was last seen on December 7, 2001, getting into a small red car on Keppel Street in Bathurst at approximately 3:50 AM after a night out with friends [3][6][7]. Her body has not been recovered [3][6].

This development offers a potential new avenue for answers in a case that has remained unsolved for nearly a quarter-century. Advanced forensic video analysis could extract previously unobtainable details from the aged footage, potentially identifying the vehicle or other important information to help bring resolution to Vaughan's family [2][4].

## What the records show

A 2009 coronial inquest concluded that Janine Vaughan had died, though her cause of death remained undetermined [6]. The initial police investigation has faced scrutiny from Vaughan's family, including her brother Adam Vaughan and sister Kylie Spelde [2]. During a September 2026 parliamentary inquiry into unsolved murders and long-term missing persons' cases in New South Wales, the family criticized the failure to forensically test and the subsequent destruction of a blood and hair-covered knife found shortly after Vaughan's disappearance [2]. They also expressed dissatisfaction with police communication and their lengthy struggle to access the original VHS CCTV footage of Vaughan's last sighting [2].

## Advanced forensics join investigation

The Vaughan family has engaged Bryan Neumeister, a forensic video and audio expert from the United States, to analyze the original VHS footage [1][4]. Neumeister informed the parliamentary inquiry that film restoration technology could potentially identify details such as the make and model of the red car Vaughan entered [4]. The family formally requested during the inquiry that the original CCTV tape be securely transferred to Neumeister for this specialized analysis [4].

Neumeister brings over 37 years of professional experience in forensic video and audio work [11]. He specializes in clarifying videos, still images, and audio recordings [11][12]. He is the recipient of 39 Emmy Awards from the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for Technical Excellence, along with over 40 additional national and international awards, including a win at the Cannes Film Festival for Technical Audio Excellence [1][12][13]. His company, USAForensic, LLC, has completed over 3,000 forensic assignments across the United States and internationally [14][18].

## What changed and for whom

The NSW Government has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Janine Vaughan's suspected murder, a reward that was increased in 2019 [3][6][17]. Detectives from the Homicide Squad's Unsolved Homicide Unit established Strike Force Toko II in 2013 to re-investigate the case [6]. During the parliamentary inquiry, Vaughan's family also asked police to consider offering immunity from prosecution to any witnesses who come forward with information that could lead to Vaughan's discovery, even if it might incriminate them [2][5][9]. This request aims to encourage individuals with knowledge to speak out without fear of legal repercussions [2].

## What we could not confirm

It was not confirmed if the original VHS CCTV tape has been securely transferred to Bryan Neumeister for analysis as of October 19, 2026 [1][2][4].
