Katie Zacharia served a record-short five days as White House Press Secretary in October 2026, officially beginning her duties on October 12 and exiting on October 16 [1][2][3][6][10][11]. This tenure marks the shortest for a White House press secretary in history [11].

Her rapid departure, coming weeks before midterm elections, generated significant political commentary and disruption in White House communications [4][18]. The brevity of her time in such a visible role drew comparisons to previous short-lived appointments in the administration [19].

## Appointment and Briefing
President Donald Trump announced Zacharia's appointment as the next White House Press Secretary on October 9, 2026, replacing Karoline Leavitt [5][20][22][23]. She officially started on October 12, with her first briefing scheduled for October 13 [6][21]. During this inaugural briefing, Zacharia stated, "I am so honored to work for President (Donald) Trump and the American people as the new White House press secretary" [8]. The White House described the briefing as a "commanding inaugural briefing" [8]. However, independent reports widely criticized the briefing [1][3].

## Credential Scrutiny
Scrutiny intensified regarding Zacharia's professional credentials following her briefing [3]. Although she holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Pepperdine University, she admitted in an interview on Fox News on October 15 that she had never passed a bar exam to practice law [16]. President Trump had previously identified her as an "attorney" upon her appointment [16].

## President Trump's Comments
President Trump signaled Zacharia's impending departure before its official confirmation [9]. He told reporters that he had advised her to "reconsider" the job due to the "nasty" media treatment she received [9]. Trump stated, "I said, 'Is this for you, Katie? Because honestly, you don't need it,'" and "Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider" [9]. He also expressed doubt about her ability to recover from the difficult start [9].

## Zacharia's Response
Following her exit, White House officials confirmed she was "transitioning out" [12]. Zacharia posted a statement on social media on October 16, saying, "It was an honor to work for him" and praising President Trump [7]. She added, "President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to" [7].

## What we could not confirm
We could not confirm the specific new role Katie Zacharia is expected to be reassigned to within the administration [14].
