- 03 · Why it matters
The anticipated blizzard conditions, including reduced visibility and strong winds, pose a significant risk of disruptions to transportation and potential power outages for residents and travelers in the affected Alaskan areas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fairbanks has issued a Blizzard Warning for Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills in Alaska. The warning, which began at 10 AM AKDT on Friday, October 23, 2026, is expected to last until 7 PM AKDT on the same day. Blizzard conditions are anticipated, with total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 60 mph.
These conditions are expected to make travel very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, with visibilities potentially dropping below a quarter mile due to falling and blowing snow. The very strong winds also carry a risk of power outages. The NWS noted that strong winds and snow will create blizzard conditions briefly on Friday before the snow transitions to rain. Strong winds are then expected to persist through Friday night, even after the snow turns to rain.
Separately, the NWS Fairbanks also issued a High Surf Advisory for the Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills region. This advisory was issued on October 20 and is in effect from 4 AM Friday, October 23, until 4 AM AKDT Monday, October 26. It warns of south to southeast winds increasing Friday morning, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph.
Independent weather services have also reported on severe weather across Alaska. Forecasts from these services on October 21 and October 22 indicated the potential for up to 20 inches of snow and gusts up to 65 mph across broader Alaska from October 23 to October 25. These broader warnings from one National Weather Service office covered seven forecast zones.
